Information about EXETER The city of Exeter has been inhabited for over 2000 years. There are over 1600 listed buildings and the city has been designated as an Area of Archaeological Importance. It is possible to see traces of every major period of English history in the architecture of the city, although the greatest legacy was left by The Romans, who built their first stone building in Britain here. Among the more unusual attractions are the Underground Passages located under Exeter's city centre, which were constructed in the 14th century to bring fresh water into the heart of the city, Exeter’s importance as a shipping port grew throughout the centuries and the historic Quayside, once a thriving international port exporting woollen cloth is now a riverside resort with shops, cafes and pubs. Mol's Coffee House and the Ship Inn, close to the Cathedral, were favourite haunts of Francis Drake and Walter Raleigh. The Royal Clarence Hotel too has had many distinguished guests, including Lord Nelson. Although essentially a port city, Exeter’s popularity as a tourist destination is guaranteed by its close proximity to Dartmoor National Park, a ruggedly beautiful area of moorland and mountains just outside the city.
